CBD oil and hemp seed oil are made from hemp. Humans have used the many industrial applications of this crop (such as making rope, paper, and canvas) for thousands of years. Almost every part of the plant has an important use.

The flowers are probably the most valuable part of the hemp plant, and have small glands known as trichomes. These crystalline structures produce very valuable molecules, such as cannabinoids and terpenes, which produce a viscous resin. Hemp leaves and stems also contain trichomes, although in much smaller quantities.

Hemp flowers have a low THC content compared to selectively bred recreational cannabis. But they are relatively rich in CBD, which makes them ideal for making CBD oil.

Technically, hemp is cannabis. Cannabis is a generic term that encompasses several species and hundreds of varieties. Hemp differs from most cannabis varieties in its low level of THC.

Most marijuana has been selectively bred to produce high levels of THC. However, the growing demand for CBD has led some breeders to increase the content of this cannabinoid in some of their varieties. There are now specimens that offer enormous levels of CBD (up to more than 20%), along with minimal amounts of THC. These varieties do not induce psychotropic effects and can be used to make CBD oils and extracts.

The main difference between these two oils is their chemical composition. CBD oil is a source of cannabinoids and terpenes. Hemp oil has no cannabinoids. But this does not mean that it is worse, it is a great source of nutrients and can complement a balanced diet.


  • CBD oil, derived from Hemp, works at the cellular level by filling the receptors of the endocannabinoid system in the body, initiating a chain of benefits that begins in the cells and permeates to the rest of the body. The endocannabinoid system is partially responsible for some physiological and neurological processes that affect our daily lives such as pain management, inflammation, sleep regulation, appetite, mood, among many others.
  • This cannabinoid influences the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system, a regulatory system of the human body.


  • Some of the best CBD research has studied the effects of this cannabinoid on anxiety. Social anxiety, specifically, is defined as the fear of social situations. This distressing disease greatly affects the individual's quality of life, and can damage work and friendship relationships. The symptoms are fear of everyday activities, a tendency to avoid social events, an extreme fear of making a fool of yourself, and low self-esteem.
  • One study looked at the effects of CBD on anxiety induced by public speaking. During this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, the experimental group was administered 600mg of CBD. Pretreatment with cannabinoids significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, and feelings of embarrassment about speaking.
  • The neural basis of CBD's anxiolytic potential. Researchers administered CBD to patients diagnosed with generalized social anxiety disorder. Compared to placebo, 400mg of CBD orally produced a significant decrease in subjective anxiety. Brain images linked the anxiolytic action to changes in limbic and paralimbic activity.


  • Media coverage of CBD's anticonvulsant action has put this cannabinoid in the spotlight. These reports detail the effectiveness of CBD in combating Dravet syndrome, a rare and severe form of childhood epilepsy.
  • In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, 120 children and young adults were given CBD and a placebo. The CBD group experienced a significant reduction in seizure frequency compared to the placebo group.


  • Quality human trials on the pain-relieving effects of CBD are few and far between.
  • Scientists have analyzed the short-term effects of CBD in relieving and improving the quality of life of young women with chronic pain. More than half of the group experienced a significant reduction in body pain.


  • Hemp seed oil cannot be compared to CBD oil in terms of scientific potential. The absence of cannabinoids means that it does not produce the same results. However, it is an important source of nutrients. In reality, it is a superfood derived from cannabis.
  • Hemp seed oil is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids Omega 6 - Linoleic Acid (LA) and Omega 3 - Linolenic Acid (LNA) which produce a powerful effect in reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol in the blood and by itself. Also known as riboflavin, vitamin B2 plays a vital role in energy production.


  • They are different products that offer different benefits. The cannabinoid content of CBD oil makes it a very valuable option for some consumers, while hemp seed oil is a nutrient-rich dietary supplement.
