Eating fish could benefit brain health, study says

Eating fish and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids may improve brain health and thinking ability in later life, according to a study.
People with higher levels of omega-3 in their blood during middle age were found to have better cognition than people with lower levels of this fatty acid.
Scientists reported that having a healthy brain in later life is important for mental health in older adults.
The new study, published in the journal Neurology, examined nearly 2,200 people between the ages of 40 and 50, with an average age of 46.
The study found that people with higher levels of the fatty acid had "larger hippocampal volumes." This is a part of the brain that plays an important role in learning and memory.
Higher omega-3 levels were also linked to better thinking skills, including the ability to understand complex concepts through logical reasoning.
“The studies looked at this association in older populations,” explained senior author Claudia Satizabal, an assistant professor of population health sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
“What's interesting about the study is that, even at younger ages, a diet that includes omega-3 fatty acids protects the brain from most of the indicators of brain aging.”
“In the study, they analyzed the levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood of people who did not have dementia, and found that higher levels were more common in those with better brain structures.”
“What we do know is that a healthy brain in later life is important for brain health in adulthood, and that a healthy diet in general is important for reducing the risk of dementia.”
