Eating fish could benefit brain health, study says

Eating fish and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids can improve brain health and thinking ability in later life, study says.
People with higher levels of omega-3s in their blood during middle age were found to have better cognition than people who have lower levels of this fatty acid.
Scientists reported that having a healthy brain in middle age is important for mental health in older people.
The new study, published in the journal Neurology, examined nearly 2,200 people between the ages of 40 and 50, with an average age of 46.
The study found that people with higher levels of the fatty acid had “higher hippocampal volumes.” This is a part of the brain that plays an important role in learning and memory.
Higher levels of omega-3s were also linked to better thinking skills, including the ability to understand complex concepts through logical reasoning.
“The studies looked at this association in older populations,” explained the study's lead author, Claudia Satizabal, associate professor of population health sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
"The interesting thing about the study is that, even at younger ages, if you eat a diet that includes omega-3 fatty acids, it would protect the brain from most of the indicators of brain aging."
