Did you know that there are more than one billion people with colds in the world annually? This disease is the most common reason why children miss school and parents miss work. It is a virus that spreads through tiny airborne droplets and is spread if:
- A sick person sneezes, coughs or blows their nose near us.
- We touch our nose, eyes, or mouth after touching something contaminated by the virus, such as a toy or a door latch.
We DO NOT catch a cold if:
- We go out with wet hair or we fall asleep with wet hair.
- We expose ourselves to the cold without shelter.
Treating the symptoms will not make the cold go away, but it will help us feel better. Also remember to drink plenty of fluids, sleep well and stay away from cigarette smoke.
Respiratory diseases are much more common during the winter season and affect children, adults and the elderly.
Some of the most common respiratory diseases are:
- Influenza: The flu is a respiratory infection caused by a number of viruses that enter through the nose or mouth.
- Cold: Unlike the flu, the common cold can be caused by different types of viruses. The condition is usually harmless and symptoms usually disappear within two weeks.
- Cold: The common cold is a viral infection of the respiratory system, which normally occurs without fever and manifests itself with inflammation of the upper respiratory tract: nose, throat, trachea, larynx, sinuses and ear.
- Bronchitis: Bronchitis is an inflammation of the tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs.
- Bronchiolitis: Bronchiolitis attacks the lungs, it is almost always caused by a virus. The disease usually occurs more frequently during the winter months.
- Pneumonia: Inflammation of the lungs, caused by infection with a virus or bacteria, characterized by the presence of high fever, chills, intense pain on the affected side of the chest, cough and expectoration.
- Angina: Inflammation of the two oval tissue pads at the back of the throat. Tonsillitis is usually caused by a viral infection, although it can also be bacterial.
A good diet will help us minimize the appearance of these respiratory diseases.
The most recommended foods to prevent respiratory conditions are:
- Fruits such as mandarin, orange, papaya, pineapple, strawberries, lemon, guava, kiwi, mango, among others.
- Vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, spinach, chard, garlic, broccoli, pumpkin, leeks, among others.
- Legumes such as lentils, chickpeas, white beans, broad beans, among others.
- Dairy.
- Eggs.
- Fish.
- Whole grains such as rice and pasta, as well as bran and wheat germ.
- Olive oil.
- Liver.
- Nuts such as raisins, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, dates, among others.
Any of these foods mentioned here contain nutrients and vitamins that help strengthen the body to prevent these respiratory diseases and infections.
With a balanced and healthy diet it is possible to reduce the chances of suffering from respiratory diseases since the body will have sufficient defenses against the viruses that generate them. A good diet will help us prevent various conditions, so it is worth choosing to consume natural foods.
"Respiratory diseases can be mild but also serious, especially in young children and the elderly."
