- In our home, determine the objects that could become a danger during an earthquake, such as paintings, mirrors, lamps and flower pots; and relocate them so that they cannot fall or harm anyone when an earthquake occurs.
- Practice drills. In advance, each member of your family, office or school should know where to stand in case of an earthquake. For example, under a strong desk or table.
- Know where and how to turn off electricity, gas and water at main switches and outlets.
- Agree with family members on a contact phone number outside the city that they can call to let others know that they are okay.
- Keep a stock of non-perishable food and drinking water for at least 3 days and store it in a small box. Also, have an emergency kit on hand with:
- Portable radio
- Battery powered flashlight
- First aid kit
- Bottled water
- Canned foods and dried grains
- A copy of your personal documents
- Whistle
- Spare battery (charged) for cell phones
