Why does mucus occur in the throat?

As already mentioned, mucus in the throat can be due to numerous and diverse causes. First of all, the most normal thing is that it occurs due to postnasal drip. That is, there is an accumulation of mucus in the nose that ends up descending towards the throat.

This is because smoke destroys one of the proteins responsible for eliminating mucus-producing cells from the respiratory tract.

And finally, it is important to note that any type of infection can cause mucus in the throat. The most common are tonsillitis, pharyngitis or even bronchitis. This is because the body responds by producing mucus to prevent the microorganism from proliferating and increasing the infection.

What can be done to reduce mucus in the throat?

Although scientific evidence is needed to prove its effects, in popular culture there are a series of simple and natural measures that apparently could help alleviate the symptoms or eliminate them.

Being in a humid environment. This can be achieved by using a humidifier or, if possible, visiting places that are near the sea.

Drink much liquid. Staying hydrated is very important to reduce the viscosity of mucus.

Gargle with water and salt. This helps to slightly loosen the mucus in the throat. Also, nose drops can be used.

Ventilate the house well. To avoid throat irritation, it is advisable to ventilate the place where you are well. It's even a good idea to go for a walk in unpolluted areas, away from traffic and smoke.

Eliminate tobacco. Tobacco is an irritant and one of the main causes of mucus.

Another recommendation is to keep your head elevated when sleeping. To do this, you can use two pillows or a blanket under the one you always use. This will prevent mucus from accumulating in the throat area.

Mucus in the throat is a very uncomfortable and common situation, which can be caused by something complex, such as an allergy or an illness, or it can simply be a response to a toxic habit.

In any case, the ideal is that, if it happens, you avoid swallowing the phlegm that is produced. Likewise, if you suffer from a cold or a stuffy nose, blow your nose. If you don't do this, all the mucus in this area can end up moving towards the throat.
