Men's skin care is an unstoppable trend. In the USA alone, revenue from these products in 2021 is estimated at $18 billion, according to data from Statista. Dr. Natividad Cano, a dermatologist specialized in facial aesthetic surgery, emphasizes that the current objective is to achieve natural results. “We are not seeking to change the patient, we are seeking to ensure that they age well.”
Men and women have many similar skin pathologies, points out the expert:
- Acne
- Rosacea (small red veins on the face)
- Melasma (dark spots on the skin caused by the sun)
- Photoaging, especially in men who do a lot of outdoor sports or who live in very sunny places
“In all these cases, the skin must be taken care of with treatments. First of all, you must have healthy skin at all levels. And control both excess fat, which is more common in men, as well as photoaging and spots. The solution is usually with appropriate dermatological treatments, with cleansing, retinol and depigmentants,” explains Dr. Cano, who is a member of the Spanish Group of Aesthetic and Therapeutic Dermatology (GEDET) of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology.
In addition, it should be taken into account that, in many cases, these treatments must be accompanied by the application of different types of lasers to eliminate spots and generate collagen.
In parallel, the ideal is to do deep cleanings and superficial peels to intensify the effect of daily treatments.
“In many cases, men tend to undergo treatments to masculinize their face. The objective is to beautify it, applying hyaluronic acid to the jaw, so that it is more marked. In this way, the angles of the face are greatly favored, the double chin is eliminated and the face appears more square,” describes the dermatologist. It may also be necessary to perform blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to rejuvenate them.
Be careful with the sun
In his opinion, “the best anti-aging there is is sun photoprotection: we should not expose ourselves to the sun and, if we do, we should protect ourselves to avoid damage to cellular DNA and the epidermis. In this way, we avoid aging and also prevent skin cancer, which is mainly caused by ultraviolet radiation. And let's not forget to take care of other parts of the body, such as the torso: we can use solar shirts to prevent aging of the skin on the body."
And after shaving?
Dr. Cano recommends keeping the skin clean after shaving, “with a good antiseptic cleanser and hydrating it with soothing agents. It is very important to indicate that perfumed creams should never be applied to the skin because, with the joint action of the sun, they can cause the appearance of poikiloderma, those small reddish spots that are difficult to remove later.
Wrinkles in other parts of the body
The new techniques, using radiofrequency using microneedles, allow the skin to be tightened and regenerated in areas where small wrinkles appear due to fat loss in:
- the elbows
- the knees
- around the navel
- buttocks
Don't forget food
“Correct nutrition helps in all aspects and in all organs. But a healthy diet alone, if there is a skin pathology, will never make it improve," warns the dermatologist, who recommends the consumption of antioxidants and vitamin C. "They are absorbed very well and will reach the skin," Explain.
Other useful foods are those rich in collagen and proteins “which will regenerate collagen and create more. Unhealthy fats and sugars, which are oxidants and promote aging, should be avoided.”
