What is cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis is a cosmetic treatment that uses cold temperatures to destroy subcutaneous fat cells. It was developed by scientists at Harvard University and approved by the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) in 2010. The procedure is based on the principle that fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than other types of cells. When exposed to very low temperatures, fat cells crystallize and die, while the skin and other surrounding tissues remain intact.
How does cryolipolysis work?
During a cryolipolysis session, a specialized applicator is used to cool the skin and underlying fatty tissue to temperatures ranging from -11 to +5 degrees Celsius. This controlled cooling induces apoptosis (programmed cell death) in fat cells. Over the course of several weeks and months following treatment, the body naturally eliminates these dead fat cells through the lymphatic system.
The procedure usually takes between 35 and 60 minutes per treated area, depending on the device used and the size of the area being treated.

Benefits of cryolipolysis
1. Effective reduction of localized fat
One of the main benefits of cryolipolysis is its ability to reduce fat in specific areas of the body. Unlike general weight loss, which reduces the size of fat cells throughout the body, cryolipolysis completely eliminates fat cells in the treated areas. This allows for a significant improvement in the appearance of problem areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and jowls.
2. Non-invasive procedure
Unlike liposuction and other surgical procedures, cryolipolysis requires no incisions, anesthesia, or lengthy recovery time. Patients can undergo the treatment and return to their daily activities immediately afterward. This makes it an attractive option for those seeking results without the risks and discomfort associated with surgery.
3. Proven safety and efficacy
Since its approval by the FDA, cryolipolysis has been the subject of numerous clinical studies that have demonstrated its safety and effectiveness. Side effects are usually minimal and temporary, including redness, swelling, and tenderness in the treated area. Most of these effects disappear within a few days or weeks.
4. Natural and gradual results
The results of cryolipolysis are not immediate, which can be an advantage for those who prefer a gradual, natural improvement in their appearance. Dead fat cells are removed naturally over several months, allowing the skin to gradually adjust to the new body shape. Most patients begin to see changes within the first few weeks, with optimal results visible 2-3 months after treatment.
5. Maintaining long-term results
Fat cells removed through cryolipolysis do not regenerate. As long as the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise, the results can be long-lasting. This is in contrast to traditional weight loss, where fat cells simply shrink in size and can re-expand over time if weight is regained.
6. Versatility in treatment areas
Cryolipolysis is effective in several areas of the body where localized fat is difficult to eliminate through diet and exercise. Some of the common areas treated include:
- Abdomen: To reduce belly fat and achieve a more toned appearance.
- Flanks (sides): To eliminate "love handles" and improve the silhouette of the waist.
- Thighs: Both the inner and outer thighs can be treated to reduce fat and improve contour.
- Arms: To reduce fat in the upper arms and combat sagging.
- Double chin: To eliminate fat under the chin and improve the facial profile.
7. Improved self-esteem and confidence
Localized fat reduction can have a significant positive impact on a person's self-esteem and confidence. Feeling more comfortable and confident with one's appearance can improve quality of life in many ways, from personal relationships to job performance and social activities.
8. Personalization of treatment
Every body is different, and cryolipolysis allows for treatment customization to address each patient’s specific needs and goals. Specialists can design a treatment plan that is tailored to individual problem areas and provide a comprehensive approach to fat reduction.
9. Less pain and discomfort
Compared to other fat reduction procedures, cryolipolysis is relatively comfortable. Although patients may experience a sensation of intense cold and pressure at first, this usually becomes more tolerable as the treated area becomes numb. The absence of incisions and anesthesia also means that there is no significant postoperative pain.
10. Compatibility with other aesthetic treatments
Cryolipolysis can be complemented with other aesthetic treatments to improve overall results. For example, some patients combine cryolipolysis with radiofrequency or ultrasound treatments to improve skin firmness and achieve a more defined body contour.
