
What is acne?
Acne is a very common skin condition caused by the accumulation of sebum and dead skin cells in the pores, which combine with bacteria present on the skin. However, acne is also caused by other hormonal disorders.

Elevated levels of prolactin in the body can also cause acne. In very rare cases, the appearance of acne—and indeed rapid-onset acne, with hair growth if you didn't have it before—can be due to a male pattern tumor, which is a very urgent condition.
Hyperandrogenemia and polycystic ovarian syndromes are very common in Mediterranean countries like Greece and can be accompanied by menstrual disorders in women. However, they are also very common in Mexico. Elevated prolactin levels are common, while congenital adrenal hyperplasia and autonomic cortisol secretion are rare.
